Once referred to as a “panty remover” (no, we don't know the details!), this vibrant Syrah and Cinsaut is fun in its purist form.
The grapes were carefully sourced from two bush vine sites in the Swartland. The Syrah vines were planted in 2001 in oakleaf soil with ferricrete as the top layer. The ferricrete sedimentary rock is renowned for higher levels of iron and good water retention beneficial for dry land farmed conditions. Syrah flourishes in this type of environment. The Cinsault vines were planted in 1988 on a sandy site not far from the Syrah.
The varieties were handpicked and vinified separately. The Syrah grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented in old french oak barrels. The Cinsaut was whole bunch fermented for 3 days and fermentation continued in old french oak barrels after pressing.
Due to the short ferments on the skins the wine is very light and bright in color. It is buzzing with awesome flavors due to the profile of the Cinsaut and the lovely structure from the Syrah. The result is an almost flirty red blend that is just buzzing with flavor! Perfect summer red.
